Our Sunday Superstar this week is Lilzo!
Welcome Lilzo!
What is it you do?
My business is a one-person operation, producing handmade jewelry.
Tell us a bit more about your company:
I specialize in earrings. I work with a variety of materials: metals, glass, acrylic, and more. I work whenever I’m feeling creative, usually at night.
How would you best describe your aesthetic?
My aesthetic is modern, fresh, and feminine. I use a lot of clean lines, and many of my designs are pretty simple.
How long have you been in business and how did you start out?
I started Lilzo in September of 2009, and before that I had another shop. Making jewelry really started as a hobby for me until I realized that I could never wear all the earrings I was making! A friend told me about Etsy, and that’s how I got started.
Why did you name your company what you did? Does it have any special meaning?
I named my company Lilzo because I’m half Chinese and my last name is Zhou, pronounced Zo, and my cousin calls me Lil’ Zhou -> Lilzo.
What 3 words best describe you:
Hard-working, positive and humorous.
What/who inspires and/or influences you?
I’m usually inspired by emotions, and that’s where my designs come from trying to capture a certain feeling or the atmosphere of a particular setting.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I always wanted to be in business, partially because my dad is in business and partially because, though academics are a strong point for me, I really don’t like math, science, or language arts.
Where do you want and what do you want to be doing in 5 years time?
In five years, I’d like to be living in either Boston or NYC, with a successful jewelry business. Hopefully, my line would be extended to wholesale to retailers.
Are there any magazines, blogs or websites you are loving at the moment?
One of my favorite photography blogs is Ache.tumblr.com. I love her pictures because they really capture emotions and moods.
What advice do you have for other artists, crafters and designers?
My advice would have to be to focus on your photography. With online business that’s the only impression the buyer has of your product. Use natural light, never flash, and try different angles. Besides that, just do what you love!
You can visit and say hello to Lilzo at her etsy store.
p.s. I have decided to extend Sunday Superstar Gabrielle Rose’s Water colour give away another week!! So, you now have ’til July 31st to enter!
