Haven’t had a Sunday Superstar since I returned from Europe, but I am trying to get this feature back into the swing! So, here we go..
Welcome Jessica Simanowski! What is it you do?
Helloooo! : )
I am a one-woman show doing art such as paintings, plush toys, vinyl toys, accessories and other things. All one of kind handmade unique things with the purpose of adding a little joy and color to our lives.
Tell us a bit more about your work:
I mostly work on my paintings the whole day. As soon as the sun goes down, I do the work that needs to be done on the computer and from time to time I take a day of to work on some plush toys or accessories. I just need to express myself all the time. If I don´t paint for a couple of weeks, I start to feel very unsatisfied and I get grumpy. I constantly expand my creations and come up with new designs or things again. And more than anything, I like to express myself in joyous ways to touch the joy within others.
What makes your work unique?
Most people recognize my work because of the strong colors I am using. And every piece that I create just has a typical Jessie-Touch to it. My paintings and toys are all strong characters.
How would you best describe your aesthetic?
I’d say my art is full of contrasts that melt into one big harmony if you look at the complete picture. I love things that seem rough on the surface, yet gently flow together underneath.
How long have you been in business and how did you start out?
I always considered myself to be an artist. I started working on canvas in 1999 and launched my first exhibition shortly afterwards. I quit working for others and have been focused on only doing my artwork ever since then.
What 3 words best describe you:
Authentic, intense, playful
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
I wanted to be anything other than “normal”. I felt like a stranger as a child already and never considered at any point to chose a regular job for myself. I have been a silent visionary, waiting for the right time and environment to start expressing myself.
What/who inspires and/or influences you?
Other artists and visionaries. And the simplicity and perfection of animals and nature inspires me.
What advice do you have for other artists, crafters and designers?
Just be yourself and don`t worry about what others might think or say about you. Also don`t worry about money, it only twists your expression. Do what you love to do and keep expressing yourself. That´s all that really matters. Once you follow your inner joy, the rest will follow also.
Do you have any events, promotions or launches coming up?
I just launched my new website, Jessica Simanowski.com, this week and am really happy about that. Now I will start to focus on getting myself some gallery shows for next year.
