Before I began this unit on hat making, I thought I might have bitten off more than I can chew.. but I was wrong! The kids in Year 7 LOVE making hats! Even the boys! Well, who doesn’t like papier mache, really? In 100 minutes, most of the class managed to get their heads measured and made the crown of their hat.
Most of the boys gravitated towards the ol’ top hat design, while most of the girls went with the balloon assisted round top hat. My class assistant Patsy, came up with a great way of measuring the balloon hats, so they actually fit the kids.
First, measure around the circumference of the students head with a tape measure. Grab a balloon, get the student to blow it up and measure around the balloon until it equals the student’s head measurement. You might need to add or let out some air depending on the measurement. Tie it up and begin papier mache of half of the balloon. It should fit perfectly!
I will keep you up to date on how this project goes.. It’s turning out to be heaps of fun thus far….
I dont like the sounds of this “balloon” technique *hides*
Looking forward to seeing the finished products though 😛 🙂
Hi Adelle, what nice and fun idea. The kids must be loving it.
I want to see all of the hats finished 🙂
Send you a hug.
I can’t wait to see how these turn out — especially that square one with th HUGE brim. Great project!
