It’s that time of year again and with all our official assessment tasks completed, what to do with 3 more lessons???
We went on a little excursion around the school and collected bits and pieces from nature. Admittedly, we don’t have THIS much flora in our school, so some kids decided to bring some nature from home.
I gave each Year 7 student a piece of hard card and some super tac glue. I told everyone to think about composition as they glued down each piece, as good and bad composition is the difference between a lovely piece of work and well, a mess.
We let them all dry and then spray painted them with some white undercoat.
Acrylic paints were then used to add colour! I made sure everyone used a thin brush and emphasised the importance of being accurate with their painting of leaves etc, and they could use whatever colours they wanted.
I LOVED the results and I think they turned out much better than expected! I’m thinking I might do this again next year and use bigger pieces of card. What do you think?
Adelle, These are great! I teach art at an elementary school K-5. I plan on using this lesson plan with my 5th graders. Thanks for the great share!
Great! Send me an email with some pics of what your kids end up making. I’d love to see.
Awesome!!!!!
Another variation on “nature collage” is to press bits into clay.(It is better to press the objects first and they cut the clay tile after) When fired and painted the relief can be emphasized by using a wash that sinks into the depressions or a “dry brush” to bring up the high points. A simple bowl can be made by forming the wet clay over a bowl.
