Sunday Superstar – Gabrielle Rose

Introducing Gabrielle Rose and her simple, yet beautiful water colour paintings.
What is it you do?
I create watercolor and ink illustrations and sell originals and prints of my work.
Tell us a bit more about your work:
In addition to selling prints and originals, I collaborate with other artists on fun projects, just to keep our creative brains working.

What makes your work unique?
I try to make original artwork that is affordable. Prints are a great way to have art on your walls, but why not add a little original work here and there? I make small, affordable, original pieces, too.
How would you best describe your aesthetic?
It’s a sort of storybook illustration aesthetic. I’ve always been inspired by illustrators from the Golden Age of Illustration, such as Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac among others, and their influence is apparent in my work. Otherwise, I would say the things I make tend to be organic, with flowing lines and soft watercolor textures.

How long have you been in business and how did you start out?
I’ve been drawing and making things ever since I was a little kid, as most kids do. From that time until now I’ve made art because I almost have to. I can’t not! I got really serious about putting my art out there for all to see about a year and a half ago when I started my blog. I’ve been happily surprised that people are actually interested in what I do, and some fun opportunities for collaborations and other projects have arisen from it.
Why did you name your company what you did? Does it have any special meaning?
My store and blog are called draw, Gabby, draw! This is basically a command to myself so I don’t slack off. I wanted to get serious about being more prolific, and I think the name is a great reminder.
What 3 words best describe you:
Hardest question! I’d say silly, practical, and nostaligic.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
Either an archaeologist, digging up dinosaur bones all day long, or, when I was very young, a bird watcher, because I thought that could be a job.
What/who inspires and/or influences you?
So many things! Stylistically I’m inspired by children’s book illustrations, especially classic ones. Otherwise I draw upon the emotions I remember feeling as a child, such as fear and uncertainty and wonder at the world. It’s hard to express these feelings with words, so I try to express them through my images. I also, as many artists probably are, am inspired by the beauty of the natural world, the bend of a tree branch or the delicateness of a flower.
Where do you want and what do you want to be doing in 5 years time?
I would be so content if I was living off of making and selling art in 5 years! I think I can do it. I imagine I’ll still be in California in 5 years, but who knows where life will take me.

Are there any magazines, blogs or websites you are loving at the moment?
I’m always checking in on Doodlers Anonymous and Scott Campbell’s blog. I follow so many illustrator’s blogs it’s not even funny! One more girl who is amazing is Angie Iver.
What advice do you have for other artists, crafters and designers?
Always do your craft. Make time for it. Don’t wait for inspiration to strike. I learned this later than sooner myself.
