Little Paverpol sculptures

Building the frame
One of my favourite classes this year has been my year 9 art class. They are such a lovely bunch of kids that it makes it so much easier and fun to experiment with new ideas. Here’s one that we started the other day. We started with a wooden base and a piece of dowel for support (Tip: Get the woodwork department to make you a class set!)
We then used armature wire to create a figure and attached the wire to the dowel with floristry wire and masking tape.

Adding form and foil
To add form to the wire, we used both newspaper and masking tape. Then we covered the whole sculpture in a layer of aluminium foil. The inspiration for these sculptures began when I purchased some Paverpol - a PVA like liquid that not only hardens fabrics but also makes them water proof!! I’ve had it sitting in my art room for months not knowing what to do with it, so I thought I’d give it a whirl with these sculptures.
The final step with these is to dress them in different fabrics dipped in Paverpol. After three weeks, the sculptures can live outside and withstand the rain, hail, wind and sunshine (that we get in one Melbourne day!) Can’t wait till the soccer players and ballerinas (and everyone else) come to life!
