Colour Paint Swatches

Colour Paint Swatches

One of the most common questions when year 7s begin painting is, ‘How do I make brown?!‘ And it’s always in that really whinny voice too! So, I developed this exercise last year and the kids really loved it. I grabbed a whole heap of colour paint swatches from my local hardware store, cut them up and stuck them down an A3 sheet.

I colour copied the sheet for everyone and the kids could attempt to mix up paints and match the colours to the swatches as best they could.

They were only allowed to use red, yellow, blue and white.

I tried to reassure them that colour mixing takes years of practice and for their first attempt, I thought most of them did pretty well.

If you’d like to download the colour swatch sheet as a pdf file to print and use in your classroom, click here (6mb) | (Right-click and ‘Save Target As’).

  1. This is a great way to teach students top mix colors! They get so excited learning that they can make so many colors with the basic primary red, yellow, blue mixed with white. I recently let my students try mixing the same above colors using black instead of white. Great post Adelle! Thanks~
