Colourful Felt balls

- felted balls
I spent the weekend at the beach, sitting by the fire (heaven!) making these highly addictive felted balls. In total I made about 55 and once I made one, I couldn’t seem to stop! I was a felt ball machine! Eventually I’m going to attach them to a felted scarf that I’m yet to make. It seems I have a love /hate relationship with scarves. I love to make them but I hate what it means when I wear them. It’s COLD!

The last time I made felt balls (above), I made them by simply rolling up some felt with a bit of soapy water and then adding more and more felt, rolling and rolling between the palms of my hands, until the ball was the right size and properly felted. Let me be honest; it took a while.

This time I used felting needles and a felting mat like the ones above. It took a little getting used to but it made the process a lot easier. Basically, I rolled the felt up into a ball, held it down on the felting mat with the felting claw. Then I punched the felt ball with the needles, adding more felt as I went to make the ball bigger, until the ball was nicely felted. These tools are also great for needle felting and attaching appliqués to knits and other funky felted stuff.
Stay tuned for my finished scarf…

Felting day…..:) ??
